The last 48hrs has seen a mini invasion of Blue Tits in Alderney. Over the last two days more than 60 have been ringed which is a greater number than in any previous year!
The very cold Spring here resulted in a poor breeding season for our local Blue Tits, it’s great to see they did so well elsewhere, we are seeing record numbers in Alderney as evidenced from both the ringing and via visual migration counts including small flocks (26 in one flock) in off the sea.
The ringing has shown these birds are larger and heavier than our resident birds suggesting they have travelled some distance from northern European populations. Love migration.
