Terms & Conditions

Deposits, Booking changes and Cancellations

Bookings: Made by telephone will be accepted only after we have received written agreement by you to accept and abide by our Booking Conditions.  Bookings made through our website will be confirmed once your payment has been verified. Once we have received your booking and appropriate payments we will, subject to availability, confirm your stay by issuing a confirmation email which will include the details of your booking. A binding contract will come into force between you and us only after we have issued you with a booking confirmation.

Where you have paid a deposit the balance of the cost of your arrangements is due not less than 70 days prior to the first day of your proposed stay. If we do not receive this balance in full and on time we will be entitled to treat your booking as cancelled by you and retain all deposits paid or due at that date.

Deposit: A 10% deposit is required to secure your booking. The balance is to be paid no later than 70 days prior to the first day of your stay.

Cancellation by us: We reserve the right, should extraordinary circumstances (such as damage to our accommodation which cannot be repaired before your visit) dictate, to cancel your booking.

Changes by us: It is highly unlikely that changes will be made to your visit. However, we may very occasionally have to make minor changes (such as the specific date or time of a trip) and we reserve the right to do so at any time. If this is necessary we will advise you of any change at the earliest possible date but minor changes do not entitle you to any compensation

Cancellation by you: You may cancel your booking at any stage, provided you do so in writing / email. Your notice of cancellation will be effective only when it is received by us. To protect yourself financially you should ensure that you have adequate travel insurance from the time of booking.

Changes by you: Should you wish to make any changes to your confirmed visit, you must notify us as soon as possible. If you need to change your booking we will do our best to accommodate you. If your new dates involve a room at a higher or lower rate the difference higher or lower will be applied. While we will endeavour to assist, we cannot guarantee to be able to meet any such requests. Where we can make changes, there will be no amendment / administration fee.

Your ABO membership number must be applied when booking

Discounts are available to individual ABO members only. (An ABO member cannot obtain the discounted rate for non-members on the same booking.)

Travel & Health Insurance: There is no reciprocal agreement with the UK for healthcare as the Channel Islands are outside EU jurisdiction. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Most policies include cover for delays caused by bad weather. (Fog can be disruptive to travel within the Channel Islands.) Medical cover is extremely important as no major treatment takes place in Alderney and any serious ailments or accidents require patients to be taken by either sea or air to Guernsey or Southampton.

We recommend you have travel insurance that covers you in the event of cancellation or should you be unable to travel.

Data Protection: When making a reservation with the ABO, information you provide will be added to our database. We will not sell, rent or transmit your personal information to unaffiliated third parties.

Complaints: We appreciate that problems can arise in spite of our best efforts. If you have a problem during your stay please bring it to the attention of the ABO warden or assistant warden so that we can put matters right at the earliest opportunity. If you feel that matters have not been resolved for you locally, please follow this up in writing to us within 28 days of your return home. Complaints should be directed to: The Hon. Secretary, Alderney Bird Observatory, Longis Road, Alderney, Channel Islands, GY9 3YB. We aim to respond to any complaints within 28 days of receipt although this may take longer if we have to investigate or wait for a response from a third party.

Our liability to you: We accept no liability for loss or damage to any personal belongings and it is the responsibility of the guest to ensure the safe storage and keeping of personal belongings during their stay.

We will not be liable for any delays or cancellations due to the weather conditions or other factors outside our control.

Special requests & requirements; If you have any special requests you should inform us of such requests before you arrive. We cannot guarantee that such requests will be met. Furthermore, we have no liability to you if such requests are not met. Failure to meet any special request will not be a breach of contract on our part unless the request has been specifically confirmed by us.  We do not accept bookings that are conditional upon any special request being met.

Disabilities and Medical Problems
We will do our utmost to cater for any special requirements you may have. If you or any member of your party has any medical problem or disability which may affect your stay, please tell us before you confirm your booking so that we can advise as to the suitability of the chosen arrangements. In any event, you must give us full details in writing at the time of booking. If you are taking part in any of our seabird ringing trips we may require you to produce a doctor’s certificate certifying that you are fit to participate. By accepting the arrangements you agree to review and consider the levels of difficulty of said trips and ensure the trip suits your level of fitness and does not negatively impact any medical conditions.

If we reasonably feel unable to properly accommodate the particular needs of the person concerned we reserve the right to decline their reservation or, if full details are not given at the time of booking, cancel when we become aware of these details imposing applicable cancellation charges.

We must point out that many parts of Alderney are wild and if not treated with respect can be dangerous. The terrain in places is rough, cliff paths are unpaved, there are steep and slippery tracks and sheer drops of a hundred meters or more in places. Ringers invited to participate in seabird ringing activities will face jumps onto sometimes slippery rocks, climbs up steep faces often covered in bird droppings. Young birds sometimes peck at ringers and adults can inflict serious wounds if not approached and handled using tried, tested and taught methods. Some trips are adventurous and not for the feint-hearted and we reserve the right to decline activities for people who we consider likely to be unable to cope with conditions.

Behaviour: All our visitors are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and acceptable manner and not to disrupt the enjoyment of others. If in our opinion or in the opinion of any other person in authority your behaviour or that of any member of your party is causing or is likely to cause distress, danger or annoyance to any other visitors or any third party, or damage to property, or to cause a delay or diversion to transportation, we reserve the right to terminate your booking with us immediately. In the event of such termination our liability to you and/or your party will cease and you and/or your party will be required to leave your accommodation or other arrangements immediately. We will have no further obligations to you and/or your party. No refunds for lost accommodation or any other arrangements will be made and we will not pay any expenses or costs incurred as a result of termination.

You will be liable for any damage or loss caused by you or any member of your party. Full payment for any such damage or loss must be paid direct at the time to the ABO warden. If you fail to do so, you will be responsible for meeting any claims subsequently made against you by us or third parties (together with our own and the other party’s full legal costs) as a result of your actions.

The ABO operates a strict no smoking policy which covers all accommodation / shared living space, out buildings, ringing / birdwatching hides and transport used during your stay (boats or vehicles).

Disclaimer: The visitor acknowledges that he / she may be engaging in activities provided by the ABO and waives any or all claims that he/she may have in the future against the AWT / ABO and any of its directors or employees for any personal injury, death, property damage or other loss which the customer may sustain as a result of activities and hereby covenants with the organisation to indemnify, keep indemnified and save harmless, the organisation against any such claim made by the visitor insofar as such injury or loss shall have been caused by ABO its employees or agents.

Bird ringers: A £10 per person supplement is requested from all visiting bird ringers. This is towards the cost of rings and to assist with the upkeep and renewal of specialist equipment provided during your stay.
