A very busy week leading a Naturetrek specialist wildlife holiday recording all things flora and fauna in Alderney ended yesterday so a little bit of a catch-up here.

Our birding highlights from the 9th include; 1 Knot (locally rare) 2 Little Stints, Curlew Sandpiper, Spotted Crake, Honey Buzzard, Grasshopper Warbler, Zitting Cisticola and Wryneck.

Both Whinchat and Spotted Flycatcher have been well represented and over 1000 birds have been ringed so far this month. Willow Warblers, Redstarts, Tree Pipits and Pied Flycatchers are still passing through, “falls” in recent days are seeing increasing numbers of Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs, Meadow Pipits, Wheatears and Firecrests.

This morning both Clifden Nonpareil (pictured) and Red Underwing were in the Observatory moth trap. Photos (JH).
